چکیده

Conventional methods for Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) retrieval are limited to areas with low reflectance such as water or vegetated areas because the satellite signals from the aerosols in these areas are more obvious than those in areas with higher reflectance such as urban and sandy areas. Land Surface Reflectance (LSR) is the key parameter that must be estimated accurately. Most current methods used to estimate AOD are applicable only in areas with low reflectance. It has historically been difficult to estimate the LSR for bright surfaces because of their complex structure and high reflectance. This paper provides a method for estimating LSR for AOD retrieval in bright areas, and the method is applied to AOD retrieval for Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) images at 500 m spatial resolution. A LSR database was constructed with the MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) surface reflectance product (MOD09A1), and this database was also used to estimate the LSR of Landsat 8 OLI images. The AOD retrieved from the Landsat 8 OLI images was validated using the AOD measurements from four AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) stations located in areas with bright surfaces. The MODIS AOD product (MOD04) was also compared with the retrieved AOD. The results demonstrate that the AOD retrieved with the new algorithm is highly consistent with the AOD derived from ground measurements, and its precision is better than that of MOD04 AOD products over bright areas.

Landsat 15-m Panchromatic-Assisted Downscaling (LPAD) of the 30-m Reflective Wavelength Bands to Sentinel-2 20-m Resolution

The Landsat 15-m Panchromatic-Assisted Downscaling (LPAD) method to downscale Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) 30-m data to Sentinel-2 multi-spectral instrument (MSI) 20-m resolution is presented. The method first downscales the Landsat-8 30-m OLI bands to 15-m using the spatial detail provided by the Landsat-8 15-m panchromatic band and then reprojects and resamples the downscaled 15-m ...

An Improved Aerosol Optical Depth Retrieval Algorithm for Moderate to High Spatial Resolution Optical Remotely Sensed Imagery

To extract quantitative land information accurately and monitor the air pollution at city scale from moderate to high spatial resolution (MHSR) with a resolution no coarser than 30 m, optical remotely sensed imagery and aerosol parameters, especially aerosol optical depth (AOD), are a necessary step. In this paper, we introduce a new algorithm that can effectively estimate the spatial distribut...

Study on Retrieval of Chlorophyll-a Concentration Based on Landsat OLI Imagery in the Haihe River, China

The optical complexity of urban waters makes the remote retrieval of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration a challenging task. In this study, Chl-a concentration was retrieved using reflectance data of Landsat OLI images. Chl-a concentration in the Haihe River of China was obtained using mathematical regression analysis (MRA) and an artificial neural network (ANN). A regression model was built ba...

Evaluation of Multi-Resolution Satellite Sensors for Assessing Water Quality and Bottom Depth of Lake Garda

In this study we evaluate the capabilities of three satellite sensors for assessing water composition and bottom depth in Lake Garda, Italy. A consistent physics-based processing chain was applied to Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) and RapidEye. Images gathered on 10 June 2014 were corrected for the atmospheric effects with the 6SV ...

A long-term record of aerosol optical depth from TOMS observations and comparison to AERONET measurements

Observations of backscattered near-ultraviolet radiation from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) on board the Nimbus-7 (1979–92) and the Earth Probe (mid-1996 to present) satellites have been used to derive a long-term record of aerosol optical depth over oceans and continents. The retrieval technique applied to the TOMS data makes use of two unique advantages of near-UV remote sensing...
